Opening doors at Edenvilla Park

Driving past the picturesque Edenvilla Park you can’t help but notice ‘the big key’ sculpture sited at the entrance – and many of you are probably wondering what it is all about!

‘Opening doors’ is the theme behind the sculpture, organised by Craigavon Borough Council, sponsored by Portadown Locksmiths and created by Molloy Engineering.

“As part of the ‘Craigavon Looking its Best’ scheme we approached businesses to sponsor flower beds or sculptures to add to and improve the overall appearance of our Borough,” explains Noel Mitchell, Parks Manager West, “and Portadown Locksmiths was one of them.

“They came up with the idea of the key situated outside Edenvilla so we commissioned the job.”

The key stands approximately eight foot high, is made of steel and sits on a plinth of granite that came from the old Bann Bridge – a great way of recycling and reusing this material within the Borough.

“Obviously as a Locksmith, I thought the key would be a good idea for a sculpture,” says Philip Troughton “as it could be representative of opening doors in a number of ways.

“At its simplest, it is opening the door to Edenvilla Park. Or it can be thought of as opening doors to the community and unlocking new ideas.

“I was keen to contribute to this project as the Council has helped me in the past so this was my way of giving something back to them as well as putting something into the community. To finish the project and complement the key I am planning to sponsor a key hole to sit opposite the key in the near future.”

The key can also be representative as the doorway to Alice in Wonderland as the rest of the park is themed to this popular story. Inside the Park you will find tree trunks carved into the different characters including Alice herself, the Cheshire cat, the Mad hatter, the Queen of Heart’s chair and the caterpillar to name just a few.

At the moment the key is black however don’t be surprised if you see it change colour in the future!

“This modern sculpture can be re-sprayed any colour we like to keep it fresh and interesting,” says Noel “so keep an eye out!

“We are really pleased with the sculpture as it is the first in the West of the Borough and are delighted that Philip sponsored it. It’s also a brilliant way for local people to take ownership of part of their park.”

So come on down to Edenvilla, check out the key, the park, the secret garden and the children’s play area – it really is something special.
